OLIE BASSWEIGHT continues to tirelessly forward the dubstep sound in
New Zealand as a producer, DJ, label boss and promoter - living and
breathing bass music for the best part of a decade.
Heavily involved in dubstep since the birth of the NZ scene in 2006
(after several years DJing drum and bass), OLIE BASSWEIGHT has worked
to foster local talent (recently establishing the DubClash national
dubstep DJ competition) as well as being responsible, solely or in
collaboration, for bringing top-tier international artists to New
Zealand and Australia including: Scuba, Distance, The Bug, Antiserum,
Datsik, Bass Nectar, Mala and Coki and more.
An experienced DJ, known for his tight mixing and flowing sets, OLIE
BASSWEIGHT is also a prolific creator of electronic music (a passion
sparked in his childhood following a chance encounter with techno, and
further fueled with the purchase of his first drum machine at the age
of 14). As a producer, OLIE BASSWEIGHT's music comes from the heart
and conjures images of the Aotearoan landscape - a geomusicalogical
symbiosis forged through attending and playing at many outdoor
festivals located throughout the beautiful South Island of New
Zealand. While happily at home tearing down venues throughout New
Zealand and Australia, it is in an outdoor setting that OLIE
BASSWEIGHT's music and djing really coalesce and take on a new
vibrancy. A deep connection through bass into the earth itself,
unfettered by the walls and man-made structures of Babylon.
OLIE BASSWEIGHT has released his own productions on a number of
respected labels including: Section 8, Rottun, Convoy Ultd, Eight:fx,
Gamma Audio, Betamorph, Empathy, Optimus Gryme, Monkey Dub and of
course his own imprint - Bassweight Recordings.
Bassweight Recordings was the first dubstep label in the South Pacific
region, spearheaded by Olie in an effort to provide an outlet for the
talent rapidly springing forth on on the rising wave of dubstep. Since
its inception in 2006, Bassweight Recordings has gone from strength to
strength. Now 16 releases deep, the roster boasts many well
established and up-and-coming artists from New Zealand and abroad. P
Vans, Detail, Organikismness, Helixr and Perverse are just a few of
the names to grace the Bassweight Recordings discography.
2012 is set to be a big year for OLIE BASSWEIGHT with a forthcoming
solo album in the works. Keep your ear cocked for his sound coming to
a town, field or forest festival near you!
For a scene that was once brewing quietly in the deepest darkest depths of South London, it’s remarkable to see Dubstep’s original spacious and organic sound influence heads as far afield as New Zealand. With pioneers Truth leading the way, a thriving hub of 140 producers has been unearthed and among the brightest prospects are Perverse a.k.a. Auckland City representatives Brett & Alex.
Inspired by a range of genres from the 808’s and lean of hiphop to the twisted rhythms of hard Drum and Bass luminaries Noisia, Black Sun Empire and Spor, Perverse were drawn to production through their collective love of bass heavy music. Purveyors of intensely dark and uncompromising eyes-down beats, their sound is exemplified by a precise control over shuddering sub frequenciesand a minimal sparseness of construction reminiscent of early Loefah or Kryptic Minds. Whilst their musical influences are notable, Perverse bring their own unique and refreshing take on the sound, with a repertoire of versatile riddims infused with intelligent syncopated beats and chest caving low end.
Perverse are rapidly building a prolific reputation and armed with a formidable collection of lethal dubs they have found their productions unleashed in the sets of Biome, Seven, VIVEK and J.Kenzo, delivering trademark clean bassweight, razor sharp percussion and desolate atmospherics. Heavy radio play is further testament to their current prowess, receiving airtime on internationally acclaimed stations including Jay 5ive and Crisis on their respective Rinse FM shows, and on scene stalwart BunZer0’s Sub.fm show which has long been a tide marker for exciting talent.
Labels have been quick to recognise Perverse’s superior sub-bass architecture, garnering significant interest with the monstrous Shaded EP dropping on New Zealand’s seminal Bassweight Recordings imprint and Mizrahi on Requiem Audio, this is just the start of a blistering discography. This is music that has to be heard on earth moving sound systems and equipped with flawless execution behind the decks, expect to witness Alex and Brett mashing up a dance somewhere near you soon.
Out of the depths of New Zealand comes a new bass driven act. Hailing from the Windy City and now based in the City of Sails, Tallan is carving his sound. Drawing huge inspiration from local Aotearoa products Truth, Optimus Gryme and The Upbeats to sounds afar such as Mala, Kode 9, Kryptic Minds and many more there is no wonder he is known for his heavyweight stepper style and his sub dominant production. He is part of a movement that is pushing sound systems further and harder all around the globe. 2011 is shaping up to be a big year to watch out for this young producer.
