TyanHAUS Presents:
MJ [All Night]
Born
in the trenches of South London and raised on the gravel riverbeds of
Rangiora, MJ’s path into music was a path well fought. As a kid her
soundtrack was mostly radio pop, until she stumbled into a world far
beyond Maroon 5. With time and curiosity, she discovered the textures of
experimental jazz and hip hop, and something clicked: music didn’t just
have to be catchy. It could be soulful, it could even be strange.
Persuaded, she started following the feeling wherever it led, and found
herself in a full-blown bass obsession. She began to understand the
power of a great selector. One DJ competition victory, three radio
shows, five outdoor parties, six festivals, plenty of club shows later,
MJ and her USB found themselves flung headfirst in without time to even
choose an alias.
Fast
forward six years and MJ has rooted herself in the harbour haven of
Ōhinehou, drawn south from the bogan jungle, experimenting her way
through genres and building a collection that speaks for itself. Driven
by the allure of multi-genre exploration, she’s a genre wanderer and an
outdoor roamer… never claiming mastery, but chasing depth in every
direction she goes; left-field UK bass, dub, techno, a sprinkling of
160, and anything percussive with a hand drum. MJ has held it down
touring the country with Pangaea, supported names like Alix Perez, Moth
Club and Aloka, carved out her own lane with Morning People, and
delivered big on festival stages including Kōwhai Grove, TwoMinds, and
of course the yearly pilgrimage to the Cobb. With nods to the likes of
Tectonic and Hessle, MJ is bonafide, unhurried and immersive. She moves
with quiet precision and reverence, and has earned her taste the long
way; showing up, digging, listening, learning. Her sets reflect that
care. MJ doesn’t just play tracks; she curates journeys.
